Quartz Stone Pit:
The pit was founded in 1892.
Quartz was used for streets and later for the glass industry.
Since 1939 is it a nature protection area.
Then it was only allowed to mine quartz in special locations, like
Viechtach.
This quartz was used for terrazzo paving stones.
The quartz from Viechtach was famous for its acid- and
abrasion-resistance.
The last application was for microchip-silicium and for
photovoltaic.
After 101 years the pit was discontinued in 1992.
"Der große Pfahl" - Bavarian's first Geotope since 2002
One of the most important beauties of nature in the Bavarian Forest
is the white legendary Quartz rocks of the "Pfahl".
"Der große Pfahl"crosses as a very old break line by a length of
nearly 150 km the Bavarian Forest's basement. There is, due to its
geology meaning and nonrecurring, a world wide interest.
In today's scenery is this "Artwork of the Nature" in manifolds
forms: impressive and spectacularly is its towering white quartz,
or the deep magnificent Pfahl-slate towers.
It was a grandiose Place for castles and burgs. A special rich
flora and fauna is located near the Pfahl-region.
The Pfahl are over ten proactive areas which were submitted to the
Europe Union as a nature protective area.
