QMapShack - offline route planning possible with OSM maps?

Garmin fenix 7X und epix Gen 2 im Test

Der Schwerpunkt dieses Tests und Vergleichs der Garmin Fenix 7X Solar und Garmin Epix Gen 2 liegt auf den Sensoren wie Höhenmesser, Positionsbestimmung und Herzfrequenz. Was unterscheidet die beiden GPS-Outdoor-Smartwatches? Und wie gut ist die Taschenlampe der Fenix 7X für den Outdoorbereich? Hier geht es zum Test der Outdoor-Smartwatches ...
  • Hi,

I've been trying to figure out a way to import the Open-Street-Map mapping data for Japan into QMapShack so that I can do offline route planning when touring.

The OsmAnd map data can be downloaded as a "PBF" file, but, apart from using it to create route data, it seems nothing else can be done with it in QMapShack.

I would have expected to be able to render the map data and list/search through the POIs in the data.

    Is this possible?

I'm very sorry, but while the program is awesome, it is very difficult to figure out how to use it for what seems to me are some very basic usage requests. I used to use Garmin products with MapSource which are quite esoteric to use by todays standards as well, but it was still quite easy to figure out how to create routes, search for waypoints, etc.

While I can use an online tiled map provider for OSM maps in QMapShack (with an internet connection), and it displays the various POIs, the POIs can't be clicked on for any information nor can they be searched for - they are simply rendered icons on the raster maps which makes them rather useless.

    Thank you,

    - Micha.

Anyways, one core principle is to have data for different purposes separated from each other. This is not like Garmin's IMG files that include Maps, Pois, DEM and Routing data in one file. In QMapshack all these features are on independent layers. By that you can mix information from independent sources, e.g. use more up-to-date routing data or DEM data with better resolution.

Usually the online map of OSM is a pretty good start. Next I would recommend to use BRouter as routing engine. Use the wizard to install BRouter locally and to download the necessary routing data for the region of interest. Don't forget to check the on-the-fly routing checkbox. This should leave you with a very simple system to plan routes.

There is also Routino. In the past this was a bit nicer to plan hiking trails. But I hardly use it lately. And the MapQuest online router was good for planning routes for cars. But the API expired so it's useless.

Edit: to search for locations: Menu->Workspace->Geosearch (but you need to register with the search services)

  • To summarize what kiozen said:

    * OAM maps can be displayed offline in QMS - use Mapsforge approach

    * Offline routing is supported with BRouter offline - load routing data from the Internet for your area first

    * OAM POIs can be used offline in QMS - load files from Internet for your area first
